AFL Stadiums: Ranking the best and worst venues in the country

There's nothing better than getting to the footy over the weekend, but there are certainly some grounds that offer a better overall experience than others.

Unfortunately for the nation's footy lovers, coronavirus has put a stop to the action.

Now, before we begin, bear in mind that literally every one of these grounds is more preferable than sitting on our couch for another sportless weekend.

So while we may have a whinge, we'd quite happily sit at Marvel Stadium and watch St Kilda play Gold Coast every week if we had to.

And rest assured, when the footy is back up and running and the crowds are allowed back in, we'll be first in line, no matter the venue.

Slide through as we dissect the fantastic, and the not-so-fantastic grounds around the land that play host to our great game.

TIO Stadium, Darwin

TIO Stadium, Darwin

Darwin was due to get another tatse of footy in 2020, though that now looks very up in the air.

While it’s a fantastic opportunity for the local community to see the game’s best players running around in their home town, it isn’t much of a spectacle on television, given the size of the ground, the atmosphere and the dew that settles on the deck in the top end.

University of Tasmania Stadium, Launceston

University of Tasmania Stadium, Launceston

The name is bad enough, and then throw in the wind and the cold, and Launceston isn’t exactly a dream destination for footy fans. The oval is also too damn big.

Mars Stadium, Ballarat

Mars Stadium, Ballarat

The Bulldogs' were due to play two more games in Ballarat in 2020 before COVID-19 forced the AFL to scrap its fixture.

While there's no doubt the footy-mad locals are thankful for the visit, it's not exactly The Ritz.

Great deck, ordinary facilities and you won't be able to feel your fingers by full time.

Marvel Stadium

Marvel Stadium

At least they sorted out the problems with the turf, right?

Where do we start? For a stadium that's less than 30 years old, the facilities are no good, the transport is a hassle, the screens are too small. We could go on.

Although, the AFL's ownership of the venue really helped in securing that big old loan from the banks, so it ain't all bad.

TIO Traeger Park, Alice Springs

TIO Traeger Park, Alice Springs

The Dees were set to take on the Crows in the Alice in round nine, but that looks a longshot now.

Games at Traeger always feel like a spectacle and the local ground comes to life.

It’s a smaller ground, and only holds 10,000, but that feels like plenty more when it erupts. Not to mention, it’s also incredibly picturesque.

UNSW Canberra Oval

UNSW Canberra Oval

Another one of the better local grounds, with the main downside being that it is in Canberra.

The Giants have adopted the nation’s capital, and it is a nice ground to watch the footy at, provided you're up high enough and brought a pair of binoculars to see the far side of the massive oval.

The facilities have improved a little over the years but it still needs work.

Also it snowed during a game last year, which was fun.

The Gabba

The Gabba

Eh. It might look nice on the telly but this is one ground in desperate need of some TLC. Or a bulldozer.

It's in a decent spot so transport and venues for before and after the game aren't an issue, but that's about it.

Facilities are no good and if you're on the ground level, you won't have a great view.

Blundstone Arena, Hobart

Blundstone Arena, Hobart

It's got Launceston covered but too often we see games at Blundstone turn to crap because of the weather.

As for facilities and transport, it's actually pretty decent. Plus, Hobart can be pretty fun - no, seriously!

GMHBA Stadium

GMHBA Stadium

The appallingly named GMHBA Stadium has seen significant development in recent times, though not enough for the AFL to let them host home finals there against other Victorian sides...

The ground is annoyingly narrow, making Geelong particularly hard to beat there. Good news for Cats fans (until they play a Melbourne team in September).

Facilities are alright and close to plenty of pre and post-game watering holes.

Metricon Stadium

Metricon Stadium

Modern, with all the bells and whistles you expect at a football ground, Metricon certainly has potential.

Now they just need a half decent footy side to play there every second week.

Bit of a trek to get to if you're on Glitter Strip for the nightlife

Sydney Cricket Ground

Sydney Cricket Ground

The redevelopment of the Paddington end means the SCG members have access to just about the best facilities and view anywhere in the country.

It has managed to retain much of the charm and is certainly intimate, though the facilities around much of the GA areas leave plenty to be desired.

The lightrail is supposed to improve transport to and from the ground but we won't be holding our breath.

Optus Stadium

Optus Stadium

For starters, we finally got rid of Subiaco and it's mile-long playing surface.

Optus Stadium has everything you want in a modern footy ground, and no matter where you sit you'll have a good view.

It's a little bit of a pain to get to but the facilities are top notch, though your wallet will certainly notice that.

Giants Stadium

Giants Stadium

Giants Stadium offers incredible vantage points no matter where you are sitting, and the atmosphere is only going to get better and better as GWS continue to grow their fanbase.

While many games are played in front of small crowds, the intimate ground still has a bit of character.

The food options might just be the best in the competition.

Melbourne Cricket Ground

Melbourne Cricket Ground

If every match was Anzac Day or a prelim, it'd be number one by a mile, but sometimes we have to sit through Melbourne versus Freo on a rainy Sunday and then it doesn't feel quite as grand.

There's not a bad seat in the house, it's well situated, facilities are up to scratch and the transport is pretty good.

Adelaide Oval

Adelaide Oval

One of the most incredible venues in the world, let alone Australia, the redeveloped Adelaide Oval is something to behold when it fills up. Crows and Power matches are always rocking, and the noise is simply deafening.

Even a moderately attended game is a spectacle, while the location and facilities are up there with the best.
